WATER BUFFALO PROJECT
Terre Des Homme Canada
Help an impoverished family of Vietnam become autonomous.
OMDAC and our partner Terre des Hommes are proud associates of this program supervised by the People’s Committee (local government) of villages where numerous families live in abject poverty.
An Asian buffalo can get a family out of poverty and enable them to envision a better future filled with hope, away from hunger and misery. In the poorest villages, farmers use the traction of buffalos to plough their rice and potato fields; these buffalos also offer milk as a source of protein and manure as fertilizer and combustible. A farmer with a buffalo can harvest four times more rice.
Asian buffalos transport heavy loads to the market, enabling farmers to sell their surplus of products. These products bring back essential revenues which can be used to buy clothing and medication and also send kids to school. By renting his Asian buffalo, a farmer can generate more revenues and help his own community.
Protein rich milk, a workforce to plough the field and manure to nourish the soil: here are some of the numerous advantages of buffalos. In return, the buffalo is happy to graze on grass and other plants.
The family who receives a buffalo must demonstrate that it can take care of the animal. They cannot sell it or kill the animal for meat. The buffalo is lent until the age of two; after which it belongs to the family. The first baby buffalo must be given to another family in need under the same conditions. This project demonstrated that every buffalo can give birth to approximately 20 other buffalos in a lifetime, an exponential benefit for communities.
We have here a guaranteed successful project. Buffalos contribute to farming, food safety, transportation of goods and many other things. In summary, the project of water buffalos participates in the economic and social development of individuals and the advancement of the community. |
